Moral Issues and No Time for Prayer

INSP0005.jpg

January is always a time for new  beginnings and  RESOLUTIONS to change old habits and begin new ones. I challenged my students to fill out a time sheet for a 24 hour day and list their time spent in school, sleep, eating, activities, schoolwork, (Face Book, texting, TV, video games) and finally prayer or time spent with the Lord. I listed all the responses  on the board and the amount of  Internet-TV time was almost 4.0 hours, but prayer time only amounted to Max(10 minutes) and the Least (1.5) minutes.
At least ONE student said that he would pray during a sport activity--that is something.

Does this seem unusual--or what if you, as a parent, did the same survey?? How much time does the parent spend in prayer?
I am lucky that I attend a Bible Study at St. Francis Borgia every Thursday for an hour. I also drive my daughter to school everyday and we pray the Rosary on the way in the car--amazing how easy it is to recite almost the whole Rosary in the short 10 minute drive to school. Do you as a parent bless your teen as the head out to school???
The Great Adventure Bible Study with Rick Cavens suggests a prayer form Numbers : The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face shine upon you and be gracious to you; the Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace." Numbers 6:24-26
"May the Lord Bless You and Keep You... (Irish blessing prayer). He also asks the study participants to relate out lives to the lives of the Israelites in Exodus, and Numbers, Judges, Ruth---where did the older generation go wrong in mentoring to their children? Why did the tribes of Israel fall into sin, worship idols of Baal, Molech and indulge in so much depravity and sexual sin?

  1. Did these Old Testament  parents teach the Law of Moses and the prophets to their children diligently?? "Teach them to your children; about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road and when you lie down and when you get up" Deuteronomy 11: 1
Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it. (KJV) Ephesians 6:4
  2. How did God judge these sinful parents and their children?
  3. In I Samuel, what was the punishment to Eli and his depraved sexually immoral sons? The death of Eli and his two sons (shortly to be described in 1 Samuel 4) is a clear word of warning about the high price parents pay for failing to heed God’s instructions to them regarding the rearing of their children. We must take this text most seriously and strive to understand what God says to us here about the awesome task of raising our children.http://bible.org/seriespage/samuel
  4. What are the parallels today with the Old Testament teachings?
  5. Why does our  21st Century lifestyle clutter the day with activities and leave no private, special time for prayer? What are the Consequences of a nonexistent prayer life?
  6. What are the parallels today with the Old Testament teachings?
  7. Why does our  21st Century lifestyle clutter the day with activities and leave no private, special time for prayer? What are the Consequences of a nonexistent prayer life? Deuteronomy 4:9  Only take care, and keep your soul diligently, lest you forget the things that your eyes have seen, and lest they depart from your heart all the days of your life. Make them known to your children and your children’s children—

I personally struggle to make time for nighttime prayers with my daughter and I even have an alarm on my cell phone called "Prayer Time" with its own ring tone at 10:00 PM.
My January vow is to include more than the Rosary and include 2 verses from the Bible chapter I study for Bible class.
I may be able to remember all the details of the Book of  Ruth, the great grandmother of Jesus--but does my child? Whose responsibility is it "to train up the child in the way that she may go and when she is old will not depart from it?"

I don't have all the answers-- help me out with a comment or post......
